Wyo-Ben is thrilled to be recipients  of the 2021 Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Land Quality Division Reclamation Award.  Our mission includes being responsible stewards of the environment and is demonstrated with our drive to be on the forefront of reclamation and environmental stewardship.  This award is a testament to management and employees of Wyo-Ben of their passion to achieve vibrant reclamation.

One of those dedicated employees was Greg Sweetser, Wyo-Ben Mining Supervisor for 36+ years and whom we recently lost, whose passion truly was reclamation. Greg once said, “reclamation is more of an art than it is a textbook operation.” Greg illustrated this through active participation at the mine sites from the first bucket of topsoil to the final recontoured landscape that speaks of his living legacy in the Big Horn Basin. Greg took pride in meandering drainages to help reduce the velocity of water and sedimentation, the opportunity to harvest precious moisture for reclamation efforts, creating wet meadows in the middle of nowhere, and rolling contours.  Greg constantly pushed the reclamation envelope, bringing forth new ideas.  Needless to say, failures did occasionally occur where folks would be back in the field to recontour and reseed, such as the drainage blowout at Pit 101T after the 10-year precipitation event.

As anyone who has ever had to reclaim lands knows, there are many challenges and Wyo-Ben has experienced a fair share of them; from the reestablishment of sagebrush, to plant diversity, mother nature giving us a 10-year precipitation event, to monitoring of Migratory Birds of High Federal Interest.  One such occasion occurred on a nest search where Matt Call, another recently lost employee, noticed a Mourning Dove acting wounded to draw attention away from her nest. With only 2 days from the annual no disturbance stipulation set to expire for the year, the discovery of the nest extended the date of disturbance by 5 weeks, causing an adjustment to the mining/reclamation plan timeline for the area.

Wyo-Ben thanks the Wyoming Department of Quality – Land Quality Division for the 2021 Reclamation Award and looks forward to a continued working relationship with the Department and industry on new and innovative reclamation practices.
